“I wasn’t sure about martial arts for my daughter but she just loves it.
I don’t think everyone realises how the martial arts are really about self-control and personal strength. It’s not violent at all.”
Jane Smith
“Martial arts have changed my life. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a way to get physically fit, learn self-defence and release everyday stress."

"It was a lucky day that, whilst going around the St Ivo School on a parent’s evening that I discovered the amazing Seni Ki Ryu martial art class in the school gym. I thought that a display was being put on it was so impressive.. but it was just the usual weekly class. That was three years ago my son, now 14, would not miss a class and he has just achieved his black belt!
Good fun, good discipline aerobic and co-ordination it is so fast moving I don’t think my son realises it its good exercise too! He particularly likes the combat side and he gets rid of a lot of teenage anger and learns to channel his powerful strength and emotions.
The class has some great adult role models. The adults always help the young people, kindness, discipline and respect is the line taken and there is no messing around. Sensei Penny keeps the class working at a fast moving pace through the evening.
That’s why it is a good class, there is a pace and energy, no waiting around always something new to do. I never have to make my son go, he is always keen to get there.
Dyspraxia, Aspergers and Autism
Seni Ki Ryu is particularly beneficial for children, young adults and adults with these challenges. The satisfaction of working in unison with a large group whilst carrying out your routines to your own ability is a great combination for those who want to keep fit and have fun and learn a new skill.
Self defence is a great confidence builder and the belt system shows that you are progressing through the sport and gaining skills.
Learning difficulties
It is thought that 1 in 10 children have some form of learning difficulty. My son has severe Dyspraxia, or Developmental Co-ordination Difficulty. People with Dyspraxia have difficulty in processing information and physical co-ordination. They may be highly intelligent, even gifted but they may have problems with speech, hearing reading or writing. They may find it difficult to follow instructions, ride a bike, tie shoelaces, read a dictionary or keep still!
My son would happily not use his left hand or left foot at all. He found it difficult to integrate his arms and legs for example in swimming, he would move either his legs or his arms but not together. It is really inspiring when you are able to find a sporting activity that these children can participate in. Sometimes just standing still can be a challenge as their limbs just jiggle and wiggle in space, often they cannot perceive where the floor is and lose their footing.
Seni Ki Ryu has many advantages for dyspraxia. Firstly it involves repetition so movements are repeated and refined until eventually they can be achieved. Repetition is really important, also using all parts of the body equally so left and right top and bottom are typically included in all routines. As Dyspraxics find it difficult to move it is difficult to motivate them! Ball sports as out, my son tells me that balls just disappear in mid air before they hit him! So the co-ordination training fits the bill.
Seni Ki Ryu is great for the balance and happiness. Everybody feels angry from time to time, but Dyspraxics have so many frustrations they have to face it is great to find that Seni Ki Ryu can really be a controlled outlet for aggression. Like a lot of these ‘spectrum’ children, controlling aggression is a real challenge. The beating the daylights out of a tough shield or padded mitt can be really good fun.
Sensei Penny Wadsworth and her team are committed to inspiring and motivating her pupils and it is a prize to find such a special class. Inclusive to all, yet pushing students to achieve their own personal best. "
